Meet AGA, the mining backed, high APY, DEFI, governance token managed by an experienced team of professionals with diverse experience in technology and construction at companies like Accenture, Microsoft, NetApp and University Mechanical Contractors!
Today there are countless tokens offering various levels of staking rewards. Decred voting, XTZ staking, ZEN nodes, and many more. New generation of DeFi tokens have cropped up and offer yield farming rewards in return for pooled liquidity on Uniswap, Balancer and others. Some even offer 10,000% APY returns (in their native unlimited supply token). Unfortunately, with only few exceptions most of these tokens don’t have any source of revenue to fund these rewards and to justify their price. Furthermore, these rewards dilute the supply and ultimately drive the price down.
AGA Token changes this by using Cryptocurrency mining to fund its staking rewards and to back its price. This simple, yet, revolutionary approach aims to deliver substantial returns to all AGA Token holders through liquidity pool staking and price appreciation. Aga Platform is a profitable ASIC and FPGA cryptocurrency mining operation with mining facilities located in Eastern Washington, where electricity prices are one of the lowest in the world. Primarily we mine Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Dash, Digibyte, Verge and Decred. You can monitor mining profitability via our NiceHash dashboard by clicking the screen on the right.

Someone Mysteriously Paid $2.5M to Send $133 in Cryptocurrency

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 68%. (I'm a bot)
Imagine sending $133 to a friend and being charged a $2.5 million fee.
That seems to be the case for a cryptocurrency user who paid a $2.5 million transaction fee during a trade on Wednesday morning using Ethereum, a cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin but with some key differences.
In Ethereum, like Bitcoin, users may attach a fee to their transactions to incentivize a miner to include their transaction in the next block of data.
The fee is currently being held by SparkPool, the Ethereum mining pool that received the fee, in case the transaction-maker wants to come forward and admit they made a very expensive mistake.
In 2019, SparkPool received an exorbitant transaction fee from a sender of around $300,000.
Tal Be'ery, a security research manager and cofounder of cryptocurrency wallet ZenGo, said in an email to Motherboard SparkPool freezing the transaction fee was the right thing to do.

GPU Mining Crash Course - START HERE!

Welcome All to the GPUMining Crash Course!
With the increase in prices in cryptocurrency, a lot of people are getting back into mining and a lot of people are brand new to the concept overall. So, I quickly wrote this crash course to help you understand what to expect and how to successfully mine your first cryptocurrency. This crash course isn't gonna have all of the fluff you'd see in a normal publication. This is just everything you need to know to get up and running on your first cryptocurrency mining rig.

What is cryptocurrency mining?

One of the main things about cryptocurrencies is that they are "decentralized". Sounds great, but WTF does that even mean? Well, the easiest way to explain it is...
You know how if you want to send your friend/family money digitally, you can do so through your bank. Your bank likely takes a transaction fee and in a few days they will transfer the money. Since cryptocurrencies are decentralized, they don't have a bank or organization to fulfill the transfer of money. Instead, they outsource the computing power of their cryptocurrency network to miners (soon to be you). These miners are verifying transactions, securing the blockchain, and powering the cryptocurrency's specific network among other things. As an incentive, the miners collect transaction fees on the transactions that they verify and collect block rewards while new currency is still being introduced into the ecosystem.

What kind of rig should I build?

You can mine cryptocurrencies using your CPU, GPU, FPGA, or ASIC, but this is a GPU Mining subreddit, so I will cater this to GPUs.
For building a great all-around GPU rig, there are two models of GPUs that I'd recommend:
Both of these GPUs have solid hashrates across most mining algorithms and for a decent price! You should be able to find both of these kinds of GPUs used for around $200-$250 each, which is a great price if you know what happened during the last mining craze! ($200 GPUs were out of stock everywhere and people were reselling them for $600+ each)
There are also plenty of great AMD GPUs for mining, but I've worked mostly with Nvidia so that's why both of my recommendations are Nvidia and not AMD.
Other parts to your rig that you'll need are listed below. Most of these can be pieces of crap and are just needed to make the rig actually run, but the one spot you DON'T want to cheap out on is the power supply unit. A decent power supply unit will keep your home from burning down while also keeping your rigs up and running smoothly. Here are my recommendations:

She's built, now what?

Now you need to do a few things. I am a Windows miner, so I will be speaking to Windows here:
  1. Update Windows - Do all of the updates. Just do it.
  2. Update Drivers - Go to the EVGA website and download GeForce experience. It will keep your GPU drivers up to date.
  3. Go to Windows Device Manager and make sure all of your GPUs show up under "Display Adapters". If it is there, but it isn't showing the Name/Model of the GPU as the name, right click it and select "Update Driver". This should fix it.
Assuming you've done all of this, you're ready to download a mining application.

Mining Software

There are tons to choose from! Claymore, Phoenix, EWBF, LolMiner, etc... It can be overwhelming pretty quickly since they all have different algorithm support, speeds, efficiencies, and a whole lot more. On top of that, in order to get them running you need to set up batch files to call the proper exe, point you to the correct pool, and a whole bunch of other stuff that can be confusing to a new user. Not to mention, you will probably need a separate miner, config file, batch file, etc. for each different algorithm that you're interested in mining on.
Instead, I recommend that you download a miner management software that will take care of most of this tedious work for you. There are a few in the sidebar, but the /GPUMining favorite is AIOMiner. It was developed by our very own community member, xixspiderxix with the intention of making mining as easy as possible to do and without any fees. It supports over 100 different algorithms, so you'll be able to mine nearly ANY cryptocurrency you'd like. Just download it from their website and it will take you through a quick tutorial to help you get set up! You can also connect your rig to their website for remote monitoring and control. You've probably seen a few of their posts around this subreddit.
Other Windows mining softwares include:
Note: Many mining softwares have fees built into them. Most are around 1%, but can go as high as 5% or greater! You want a mining software with little or no fees at all so that you get to keep as much cryptocurrency as possible. These fees aren't something you actively pay, the software will automatically take it by mining on the developers behalf for a given amount of time and then switching back to mining on your own behalf. So, please be diligent in the software that you evaluate and make sure it is reputable.

I keep hearing about NiceHash. What is that?

The asshole of the mining industry. Jk, but not really.
NiceHash is a software program that allows you to sell your rig's hashing power to someone on their marketplace. They market themselves as profitable mining, but you're not really mining. You're selling your power in exchange for Bitcoin.
They did a great job telling people that with them, you're always mining the most profitable coin, but that's just not true. Since it is a mining marketplace, they make you mine whatever their most expensive contract is. If their contracts are below market prices, then you're not operating as efficiently and profitably as you could be.
NiceHash also has a sketchy history, which continues to this day. In 2017, they were hacked and lost $65M worth of Bitcoin. No one got paid out for MONTHS and many of their executives conveniently resigned. Their platform is also used to destroy cryptocurrencies. Since people are able to purchase mining power on their platform, people have used their platform to purchase enough mining power to control individual cryptocurrencies and duplicate coins, which increased the malicious user's wealth while completely destroying the integrity of the coin's blockchain. HoriZEN (formerly ZenCash), Ethereum Classic, and many other great cryptocurrencies have been the victim of NiceHash's platform.
For this and many other reasons, we highly recommend that you stay AWAY from Nicehash. We understand that it is extremely easy to use and you get paid in bitcoin, but they are destroying the industry with their greed and lack of motivation to change their platform for the protection of cryptocurrencies.

Concluding Thoughts

This is pretty much everything you need to know to get started. We covered the hardware, setting up the software, which software to use, and AIOMiner's tutorial will get you up to speed on how to actually mine the cryptocurrency that you want better than I can explain it, so I'll leave that part to them.
If you have any questions on this crash course, please leave a comment below where myself and other community members will be able to help you out.

The 8 Skills to Be a Good Miner

Many people may feel quite confused about their low profit now. Maybe you forget to think about the small details when you are mining. Small little details will make big difference in your final income.
Now, i want to share you the 8 skills to improve your benefits.
1, Get a cheaper power
Everyone knows the power is the most charge in mining, if we can find a cheaper electricity, it will be good. So, how to get a cheaper electricity?
55% of the mining is in China, and 40% of the mining is in Sichuan China. Why? Because there are many hydroelectric power station in there. So, you can find a place near the station and get a cheaper electricity from them.
If you can find free electricity, it is the best anyway
2, Choose low w/t machine
As you know, low comsuption machine is very popular those days, like S17 pro 53t, T17 42t. They are 7nm technical, the w/t is low and it can even overclock, it maybe a good choice. Also, we need to consider the price of machine.
Cheap price machine means fast ROI, But low W/T machine has a bright future.
3, Buy miner when BTC begin to raise after long drop
When BTC price keep falling, of course the machine will be cheaper and cheaper. When the BTC price begin to raise, we can buy miner at that time, because the price is the cheapset and you can earn money back soon.
Normally at that time, the good machine will be sold out quickly, when the market feedback that those machine are good, you may be late to get the chance. So, make your plan for purchasing before, when price down, get them.
4, Do not forget BCH, BSV, ZEN coin
Do remember SHA-256 Algorithm can mining BCH and BSV as well. Sometimes those coin may get even a better profits than BTC.
Some miner has auto setting for BTC, but you can choose BSV and BCH mining if you set it,
5, Notice the half reward period information
Because the half reward time is coming in 2020, there will be a chance or a risk for it. Many low hashrate machine may be out of the style and high hashrate will be more competitive.
Low your risk and not to buy those cheap machine now
6, Choose a good future crypto currency
There are many coins in this field now, we need to analyse and find a better direction for mining. Like Z11, many people use it for ZEN mining nowadays, and their benefits is top now.
Also, people buy many S17, it can earn money back before next year half reward time. And they believe the BTC price will increase creazily as last two times.
7, Make plan for your selling of coin or machine
As you know, the price of the BTC changes everytime, we can mining the BTC first and keep it in hand, do not sell it every day. It is very stupid. Just sell it when price high, you do not need to take any risk if you do not buy BTC directy. We do not need to care about the low price situation, we only need to wait. When chance come, get it.
Same for machine
8. Don't be fooled by the mining calculator
Many sites calculate mining profits based on hardware and electricity prices. If you've never mined before, you might be happy to see the numbers provided by these websites and calculators and think, "I'll make a fortune!"
However, these websites don't tell you: in addition to the cost of electricity, there may be other current costs, such as maintenance, cooling, rent, labor, etc. Generally, the hash rate and power consumption of the device are slightly different from what the factory says.
This difference is more common in unpopular brands. You can better understand the actual hash rate and the actual power consumption by watching the miner test video on YouTube. In addition, depending on the distance from the meter to the device and the type of cable used, the power loss from the meter to the device can be as high as 200 watts.
In addition to the cost of mining machines, some initial costs are required to prepare the infrastructure, such as cooling and venting, cabling and distribution, shelves, network and monitoring equipment, safety measures, etc.
The network difficulty is constantly changing and increasing at a significant speed, which directly affects the mining revenue. You can check the bitcoin network difficulty chart to see its growth rate, but your miner will not always be 100% active.
Due to maintenance, network problems, ore pool problems, power problems and many other problems, the miner may be offline for several hours. I suggest that you consider setting the normal operation time of the miner to less than 97% when calculating. We have rich mining experience in professional ore pools, and the normal operation time of these mining machines will not exceed 97-98%.
Thats all, hope those information will help you become a good mining investor.

KiwiSaver Capital Monthly Update + New Fund Announcement!

KiwiSaver Capital Monthly Update + New Fund Announcement!

KiwiSaver Capital Monthly Update

Happy New Year Visioners. We are incredibly excited to announce the creation of a new fund. Many people have been asking us to create a separate version of The Momentum Fund which uses Ethereum as the key asset rather than Bitcoin. This is exactly what we have done. Today, our newest offering "Momentum - Ethereum" has been born and is open for investment.
The strategy follows the exact same lines of The Momentum Fund, which can be read here. For a quick recap, the fund will sit in one of three states: 100% ETH, 100% stable coin or a 50/50 split. Once per month we decide which state to sit in according to two simple yet effective long term indicators of momentum, the 100 & 200 DMAs. This strategy is designed to avoid massive drops in the crypto market while still being invested in the majority of its gains.

Momentum - Ethereum

Ethereum has had an excellent month and fundamentally its outlook for 2020 is spectacular. Although we do not have any halvings to look forward to, the growth of Ethereum-based DeFi and ongoing development towards Eth2.0 cannot be passed by. Right now, ETH is sitting at US$175. This is above the 100 DMA ($158), but still below the 200 DMA ($181). Therefore, the first allocation for our Ethereum Momentum Fund will be 50% ETH, 50% stable coin. We're really excited to see how this performs compared to our Bitcoin-based Momentum Fund.
https://preview.redd.it/oddh2ndq3nb41.png?width=1232&format=png&auto=webp&s=b9f32ecad7ad5cf17c043689ab4c253334b26ecf

The Momentum Fund

What a start to the year it has been! After a few months of sitting on the sidelines while Bitcoin price floundered, January has seen Bitcoin's price ($8930) push upwards through the 100 DMA ($7970), but not quite the 200 DMA ($9040). This means that we will return to 50% Bitcoin exposure to start capitalising on this positive momentum. If Bitcoin can continue to build momentum over the coming month, it looks like the fund may soon be 100% BTC allocated. However, as we see time and time again in cryptocurrency, anything could happen. If BTC happens to retrace from here, 50% of our capital will be protected in stable coin exposure, until bullish momentum is fully confirmed.
You can see the full Momentum Fund strategy here.

The Community Fund

This fund pools the community's views on which two coins will perform the best over the subsequent thirty days. This month DGX and ZEN have been chosen to make up the fund and has so far returned a solid +20% compared to previous month. Please be sure to vote for which coin you believe will perform the best in the month of February at the link below.
Voting for the February allocation is now open and can be found here.

Growth, Intrepid, Balanced & Defensive Funds

Our risk-staggered funds continue to make consistent returns. The exception to this is the Intrepid Fund - our highest risk fund - which has struggled to maintain gains in the wake of poor minnow altcoin returns. The Growth, Balanced & Defensive funds are long term fund options. We would prefer to protect your capital and achieve steady growth rather than play it risky for triple digit gains. Over the past 12 months the fund returns have been as follows:
  • Growth +24.6%
  • Balanced +14.6%
  • Defensive +10.4%
We're quietly pleased with the returns from the Defensive Fund over the past 12 months. +10.4% return for a heavily defensive fund is quite good in our eyes. Reallocation of all funds has now occurred.
Thanks to everyone who continues to trust their capital with us. We're excited to see how Momentum - Ethereum performs from here on out. Cheers!

KiwiSaver Capital Monthly Update

KiwiSaver Capital Monthly Update

The Momentum Fund

Bitcoin has continued to range-bound trade over the past month and has well and truly lost momentum. As you will know from our last update, BTC crossed below the 100 DMA in mid September but was still sitting above the 200 DMA. This meant that for our last reallocation we reduced our Bitcoin exposure to 50% and the remaining 49% was parked in a stable coin (ignoring the 1% GVT compulsory allocation). The beauty of our strategy has paid off here - the Momentum fund returned -6.25% in the past month, compared to a loss of -12.5% for funds which maintained a full Bitcoin allocation. Using a momentum strategy we have been able to avoid that additional 6.25% loss and preserved our capital.
In late September BTC also dropped below the 200 DMA. At the time of writing BTC is at $7937, under both the 100 DMA ($9829) and 200 DMA ($8812). Therefore, we will pull back to maximal stable coin exposure for the next month (and possibly longer). We know that when Bitcoin decides to fly it often does in spectacular fashion, so if Bitcoin can pick up some momentum in the next thirty days (signalled by a cross above the 200 DMA) then we will reallocate back to some BTC exposure. For now, we are playing defensively.
You can see the full Momentum Fund strategy here.
https://preview.redd.it/0z4k1lplrkt31.png?width=1229&format=png&auto=webp&s=4376a640bbf63ded2926f5d2f4ec1041665323f8

The Community Fund

Our newest fund pools the community's views on which two coins will perform the best over the subsequent thirty days. This month BTC and BNB have been chosen to make up the fund and are doing fairly dismally at the moment, -20%. There is still a third of the month left before the Community Fund's reallocation, so hopefully we can get back into black. Please be sure to vote for which coin you believe will perform the best in the month of November at the link below.
Voting for the November allocation is now open and can be found here.

Growth, Intrepid, Balanced & Defensive Funds

Our risk-staggered funds continue to perform strongly overall, but have had a lacklustre month. Reallocation of all funds has now occurred. Most funds will maintain a decent allocation to Bitcoin and the high market cap alts, while some smaller altcoins will get exposure due to important upcoming events this month such as TRX, NXS, XRP and ZEN.
Thanks to everyone who continues to trust their funds with us, and cheers to another successful month!

Time to discuss the elephant in the room. Nicehash 51% Attacks.

While I've argued for ProgPoW because I'm not a fan of ASIC manufactures because of their malicious business practices, I think we all know the real problem for PoW security, Hashrate Rental sites. Let's go through a short-list of coins that are listed on Nicehash, where hashpower could be bought and then executed a 51% attack.
Monacoin 51%
BitcoinGold 51%
EthereumClassic 51%
Vertcoin 51%
ZenCash(Now Horizen) 51%
BitcoinPrivate 51% (Ethical Hack)

Nicehash has been the #1 to go to "sell" hashpower for whatever coin they support for BTC and other rental services such as miningrigrental. While we cannot prove that this attacks were used by buying hashpower on nicehash, a ethical hacker Geocold lived streamed how easy it was to attack PoW coin BTCP. "using a couple of hundred dollars’ worth of rented hashpower he’d purchased from Nicehash with BTC" (bitcoin.com). We can assume then that other 51% attacks all follow this method.

Step 1. Buy more Hashpower than the current network using rental services
Step 2. moves coins on the true network to other addresses, makes deposits, then withdraws them to a safe addresses
Step 3. broadcast the untruthful chain to the network
Step 4. this reverts the truthful network.
Step 5. Profit.
Shockingly, several crypto-currencies not only were cheap to attack but also had plenty of hash rate for sale on NiceHash with which such an attack could take place. When 51% attacks were considered in the past, most calculations included the cost of hardware, electricity, and maintenance. But this new “rent-a-attack” method is proving dangerous for smaller networks. (ccn.com)
This is what happened to ETC recently. Few people who were using nicehash services commented that they noticed a pay-bump mining ETH-HASH.

One PoW altcoin team has set up a script to constantly monitor their hashrate. In the event of a spike of over 10%, they will be automatically notified. Should the newly added hashrate emanate from an unknown pool, or be in danger of tipping an existing pool over 50%, they have a large quantity BTC on standby with Nicehash ready to purchase their own firepower to counter the attack (bitcoin.com)
Again it shows the only way that people counter this is to over-bid/buy more hashrate.

While I understand PoS doesn't suffer from these type of attacks. However I find it unreasonable to say PoW is flawed because 51% attacks. Hashrental services we not envisioned by Satoshi's PoW. Any actual mining actors not using hash rentals would need a sizable amount of resources to perform a 51% and double-spend even on small cap coins. Nicehash takes your money and doesn't care.

The elephant Crypto needs to deal with it shutting off nicehash and rental services. After the nicehash hack I know I saw a sizable increase in profits because difficulty dropped on so many coins.

IMHO Nicehash needs to turn-off purchasing hashrate and instead turn to "auto-covert" where they mine the coin that's profitable that day and turn into bitcoin for the user. We wouldn't have the chance of 51% attacks.

Mining ERC-918 Tokens (0xBitcoin)

GENERAL INFORMATION

0xBitcoin (0xBTC) is the first mineable ERC20 token on Ethereum. It uses mining for distribution, unlike all previous ERC20 tokens which were assigned to the contract deployer upon creation. 0xBTC is the first implementation of the EIP918 mineable token standard (https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-918), which opened up the possibility of a whole new class of mineable assets on Ethereum. Without any ICO, airdrop, pre-mine, or founder’s reward, 0xBitcoin is arguably the most decentralized asset in the Ethereum ecosystem, including even Ether (ETH), which had a large ICO.
The goal of 0xBitcoin is to be looked at as a currency and store of value asset on Ethereum. Its 21 million token hard cap and predictable issuance give it scarcity and transparency in terms of monetary policy, both things that Ether lacks. 0xBitcoin has certain advantages over PoW based currencies, such as compatibility with smart contracts and decentralized exchanges. In addition, 0xBTC cannot be 51% attacked (without attacking Ethereum), is immune from the “death spiral”, and will receive the benefits of scaling and other improvements to the Ethereum network.

GETTING 0xBITCOIN TOKENS

0xBitcoin can be mined using typical PC hardware, traded on exchanges (either decentralized or centralized) or purchased from specific sites/contracts.

-Mined using PC hardware

-Traded on exchanges such as

MINING IN A NUTSHELL

0xBitcoin is a Smart Contract on the Ethereum network, and the concept of Token Mining is patterned after Bitcoin's distribution. Rather than solving 'blocks', work is issued by the contract, which also maintains a Difficulty which goes up or down depending on how often a Reward is issued. Miners can put their hardware to work to claim these rewards, in concert with specialized software, working either by themselves or together as a Pool. The total lifetime supply of 0xBitcoin is 21,000,000 tokens and rewards will repeatedly halve over time.
The 0xBitcoin contract was deployed by Infernal_Toast at Ethereum address: 0xb6ed7644c69416d67b522e20bc294a9a9b405b31
0xBitcoin's smart contract, running on the Ethereum network, maintains a changing "Challenge" (that is generated from the previous Ethereum block hash) and an adjusting Difficulty Target. Like traditional mining, the miners use the SoliditySHA3 algorithm to solve for a Nonce value that, when hashed alongside the current Challenge and their Minting Ethereum Address, is less-than-or-equal-to the current Difficulty Target. Once a miner finds a solution that satisfies the requirements, they can submit it into the contract (calling the Mint() function). This is most often done through a mining pool. The Ethereum address that submits a valid solution first is sent the 50 0xBTC Reward.
(In the case of Pools, valid solutions that do not satisfy the full difficulty specified by the 0xBitcoin contract, but that DO satisfy the Pool's specified Minimum Share Difficulty, get a 'share'. When one of the Miners on that Pool finds a "Full" solution, the number of shares each miner's address has submitted is used to calculate how much of the 50 0xBTC reward they will get. After a Reward is issued, the Challenge changes.
A Retarget happens every 1024 rewards. In short, the Contract tries to target an Average Reward Time of about 60 times the Ethereum block time. So (at the time of this writing):
~13.9 seconds \* 60 = 13.9 minutes
If the average Reward Time is longer than that, the difficulty will decrease. If it's shorter, it will increase. How much longer or shorter it was affects the magnitude with which the difficulty will rise/drop, to a maximum of 50%. * Click Here to visit the stats page~ (https://0x1d00ffff.github.io/0xBTC-Stats) to see recent stats and block times, feel free to ask questions about it if you need help understanding it.

MINING HARDWARE

Presently, 0xBitcoin and "Alt Tokens" can be mined on GPUs, CPUs, IGPs (on-CPU graphics) and certain FPGAs. The most recommended hardware is nVidia graphics cards for their efficiency, ubiquity and relatively low cost. As general rules, the more cores and the higher core frequency (clock) you can get, the more Tokens you will earn!

What is ProgPoW? Why Ethereum needs it moving forward.

Update: ASIC Manufacture say they can make a ProgPoW ASIC

Disclosure, I'm a avid GPU miner with some 90 Nvidia GPUs running out of my garage. I've been in and out of the mining scene since 2011,2014, and recently 2017. I Hold BTC, ETH, RVN. I directly benefit from them moving to ProgPOW, but not without a good reason. Everytime I've gotten into home GPU mining ASICs comes out BTC, LTC, I've had to give up every time. I refuse to see it happen to another excellent coin.

I've been a proponent of Ethereum following there ASIC resistance stance outlined in the original white-paper. Now that ProgPOW has been given the "Green-light" by Hudson Jameson to move forward with ProgPOW. I really think its time to discuss the Algorithm. What it is, who created it, why Ethereum needs it and dismiss crazy theories such as Nvidia funding development.

Before we start highly suggest everyone watch BitsBeTrippin's video where she breaks down ProgPOW at devcon4.

A Quick breakdown of What is ProgPOW?
ProgPoW is a proof-of-work algorithm designed to close the efficency gap available to specialized ASICs. It utilizes almost all parts of commodity hardware (GPUs), and comes pre-tuned for the most common hardware utilized in the Ethereum network.

From reading the white paper listed on Github the main idea behind ProgPOW is NOT to achieve total ASIC-resistance. The idea is to kill the 50-1000x Efficiency gains from specialized ASIC hardware. Such as what we saw recently with Equihash 200/9 coins where 50x was achieved over GPUs. ProgPOW algorithm uses most of the GPU minus a few parts. It takes the original Eth-Hash algorithm and add more features.
The main elements of the algorithm are:
ProgPOW will Inherit Eth-Hash current DAG size meaning 2GB and 3GB will not be able to mine still. Additionally no advantage is given to Either Nvidia or AMD GPUs
ProgPoW has been designed to be a vendor-neutral proof-of-work, or more specifically, proof-of-GPU. ProgPoW has intentionally avoided using features that only one core architecture has, such as LOP3 on NVIDIA, or indexed register files on AMD.

According to Kristy, she has had direct contact with AMD and Nvidia on testing ProgPOW.
As part of its review process, ProgPoW was submitted to (and reviewed by) both AMD and NVIDIA engineers. The group known as IfDefElse — of which I am a part of — has been actively working with both companies to ensure this effectively closes the efficiency gap that we speak publicly of in our papers and articles
This does not mean one side is favored over the other. She's giving and getting input from the major GPU manufactures in order to support Crypto-mining. Additionally she says "AMD is actively working with us to optimize ProgPoW for their architectures.". Using ProgPOW optimized for GPUs rids us of bowing to Bitmain, innosilicon, halong and there scandalous ways for hardware.

ProgPOW IS NOT the "God-sent savior of all GPUS" Even Kristy understand that complete ASIC-resistance is a fallacy. This will never be achieved. However By working with GPU manufactures and Crypto Dev's we can make a coin where GPUs run along-side with ASICs, but the efficiency gains are diluted. Meaning the time and money invested into an ProgPOW ASIC machine does not make economical sense. Rather just buy the actual GPU.

Quote sources from Kristy's Medium article.

Why does Ethereum need ProgPOW?

I suggest reading Siacoin's good medium article on the subject of ASICs.
It's too much to cover here but in short why we need ProgPOW against current ASICs and future ASICs
At his point in time we actually don't need ProgPOW. However we do need it as time goes on. Early Bitcoin ASICs didn't dominate BTC however as time went on, they became better more efficient than GPUs, and started dominating BTC's network. The same fate happens to any "ASIC-Resistant coin" that decides it's not a big deal (looking at you ZEN). Without a set date on POS Ethereum would have suffered the same fate. As Siacoin Dev states;
We also had loose designs for ethash (Ethereum’s algorithm). Admittedly, ethash was not as easily amenable to ASICs as equihash, but as we’ve seen from products on the market today, you can still do well enough to obsolete GPUs.
What makes ASICs bad? Isn't it better to get Hash/watt ratio? This saves tons of electric. One of PoW biggest faults. I think there is nothing bad about the ASICs hardware. Equihash ASICs achieved 20 1080ti level hashrate at 1/20 of the power. That's impressive. The problem with ASIC hardware is who, where it comes from, and there shady business practices.

  1. "It’s estimated that Monero’s secret ASICs made up more than 50% of the hashrate for almost a full year before discovery, and during that time, nobody noticed." How much of ETH hashrate could be ASICs? We won't know till the fork.
  2. I've heard a lot that ASICs aren't all that big of a deal. Focus on POS. Take in account Siacoins own network hashrate which allowed bitmain/innosilicon ASICs on the network till they forked in favor of their own ASICs after just a year (Siacoins drops 96% network hashrate).
  3. "In the case of Halong’s Decred miner, we saw them “sell out” of an unknown batch size of $10,000 miners. After that, it was observed that more than 50% of the mining rewards were collecting into a single address that was known to be associated with Halong, meaning that they did keep the majority of the hashrate and profits to themselves." GPU manufactures would not and cannot be do the same.
ASICs destroy networks, centralize the pools, and hardware. Leading to them to be controlled by large entity in this case its Chinese companies. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fool. Of course this doesn't happen overnight, hence my original statement that we don't need ProgPoW now. In a years time that may totally change and it will be far to late.

GPUs allow anyone to support the network. Think of the crypto run-up. Fry's Electronics, Microceneter, online E-tailers were SOLD OUT OF GPUs. Think of that! People were buying GPUs to support the network for token rewards(worth money) How many new miners, people, got interested in crypto because of this? How about friends who saw the rigs and word of mouth spread that you could go out buy a graphics card, built a rig, and earn money? obviously we know the effects because it wasn't sustainable in the remotest. However it's an attest that GPU mineable coins makes it accessible to everyone.

For Ethereum to successfully go POS it cannot hand it network over to ASIC mining companies in the meantime. POS is on an unknown release date/timeframe. I understand Vitalk does not like PoW however that's what currently securing the network. Because of this Ethereum must maintain as much decentralization as possible with GPU mining. This is what ProgPOW does. It gives AMD and Nvidia GPUs the advantage they need over ASICs created by Bitmain or others. It allows me to continue to secure the Ethereum network with my 90 GPUs until full POS switch.

Conclusion
Did it have to be ProgPOW? No, as UBIQ has shown they created there own unique ASIC-resistant algorithm. ProgPOW was given to us by the Ifdefelse team completed. This required no work from the ETH devs at all. It's open source and has been reviewed by the Etheruem Dev team. If they haven't found any issues with it yet, I don't see why we cannot implement it.

An argument can be made that if we do switch we risk security, because we'll lose network hashrate and decrease the cost to attack the network. I have two things to say to that. One since ProgPOW is new, Nicehash has not added it to it's network to rent yet. I wouldn't know how long nicehash would take to it add it, but it gives us a short while to get people on new ETH POW network. Additionally to attack the network, they would need massive coordination from GPU mining farms. Such a thing has never been recorded.

The 51% attacks that have happened recently (BCD/BTG/ZEN) and as of 1/8/18, ETC. These were all ASIC mineable coins. In the case of equihash coins, an ASIC that achieved 50x more efficiency had just came to market. It's not proven, but it leads me to believe a bad actor with early access to ASICs was able to attack those coins. All except ZEN have switched to Zhash algorithm. Even ZCASH/Zelcash has funded ProgPOW development. While I disagree they should do this, because that's entirely the problem too many coins using too many of the same algorithm, in the end it's up to the devs.

TL:DR; ASIC-Resistance is futile and a fallacy. PoS or other solutions are needed but to get there we need to keep PoW as Decentralized as possible this is what ProgPOW does.

Every-time I've gotten into home GPU mining ASICs comes out BTC, LTC, I've had to give up every time.

It's too much to cover here but in short why we need ProgPOW against current ASICs
At his point in time we actually don't need ProgPOW. However we do need it as time goes on. Early Bitcoin ASICs didn't dominate BTC however as time went on, they became better more efficient than GPUs, and started dominating BTC's network. The same fate happens to any "ASIC-Resistant coin" that decides it's not a big deal (looking at you ZEN). Without a set date on POS Ethereum would have suffered the same fate. As Siacoin Dev states;

One, since ProgPOW is new, Nicehash has not added it to it's network to rent yet.

Update 10/10/19 See medium article on ProgPoW FAQs.

This past week, there was a sharp rally in bitcoin above the $7,500 and $8,000 resistances against the US Dollar. BTC even surged above the $9,500 and $10,000 levels before correcting lower.
Later, the price corrected below the $9,500 support and the $9,000 pivot zone. However, the decline was contained below $9,000 and the price remained well above the 100 hourly simple moving average.
A low was formed near $8,896 and bitcoin started a fresh increase. It broke the $9,000 and $9,200 resistance levels. Moreover, there was a break above the 50% Fib retracement level of the downward correction from the $10,578 high to $8,896 low.
However, the price seems to be facing a strong resistance near $9,850 and $9,900. Besides, the 61.8% Fib retracement level of the downward correction from the $10,578 high to $8,896 low prevented any further upsides.

Crypto Custody Firm Xapo Initiated 5 Whale Transfers On Nov 1 Citing data from the Bejijing-based blockchain security company Chainsguard, the Bitcoin network witnessed multiple whale transfers on Nov 1. At 21:10:38 UTC on Nov 1, Xapo, a Bitcoin custody service provider, has conducted five whale transfers with the largest amount within one transfer marking up to 20,000 BTC. The total number of moved BTC in these transfers records 65822.01. Many of these BTC originated from the transfers of 4,999 to 10,000 BTC collected by Xapo on the Bitcoin chain at 19:19:49 and 19:32:12 on the same day. One of the main BTC sources initiated by the address starting with 37whD5 was crypto exchange Bitstamp. Previously, the above-mentioned exchange announced that its custodian would change to BitGo. Otherwise, Bitstamp had a great transfer with more than 110,000 BTC involved on October 15. At 20:53:20 on Nov 1, the wallet address beginning with 3AdpZc initiated a transfer of 5000 BTC to the exchange Poloniex. After analysis, the source can be traced back to the coins accumulated by Poloniex in March 2016. Generally speaking, the whale transfer carried out by institutions comes from the needs of business or customers. Sometimes, it is only the planned wallet management.
Utah To Facilitate Voting For Disabled Individuals Through Blockchains Recent reports indicate that blockchain technology will soon be used in Utah, as part of a trial project meant to allow disabled individuals to cast their votes. To put things into perspective, the local council and government of Utah have decided to allow blockchain-based voting via smartphones in the upcoming municipal election that will take place in November. The platform that disabled voters will be using for this election represents the result of a fruitful partnership between the Utah Country Elections Division, the National Cybersecurity Centre, Tusk Philanthropies and Voatz, a local voting app development company.
Ethereum To Increase The Blocksize By 8x Ethereum is partially addressing the many complexities of sharding by simply increasing the blocksize from the equivalent of about 1MB every ten minutes to circa 8MB. Danny Ryan, the Ethereum 2.0 coordinator, publicly said: “We are making the blocks bigger based on recent research on safe block size and propagation times, so the data availability of the system is still > 1MB/s so you can still get similar scalability gains when doing things like ZKrollup and OVM.” ZK rollups are a hybrid scaling method that combines on-chain security and second layer networks through smart contracts and zero knowledge methods. OVM is the Optimistic Virtual Machine from Plasma, with both being more sort of on top of Ethereum’s public blockchain.

During the first quarter of the year, Bitcoin was trapped inside a tight trading range, where major players began buying the fear of retail crypto investors and accumulating the asset at the lowest possible prices.
Starting in the second quarter, the first-ever crypto asset rocketed up from that trading range, and went on a parabolic rally that didn’t stop until Bitcoin met former bear market resistance at $14,000 where it was rejected.
After three consecutive red monthly candles in a row, October closed green and kept a potential bull flag formation on monthly price charts intact, giving bulls hope that the crypto asset’s 2019 rally isn’t totally finished.
